Understanding Band Scores and How They're Calculated

IELTS Mastery Hub uses the familiar IELTS band scale from 0 to 9. Your results are shown in 0.5-band steps such as 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0.

This guide explains where those numbers come from inside the app.

Reading and Listening scores​

For Reading and Listening, your band score comes from how many answers you got right.

The app checks your answers, works out your correct-answer percentage, and then converts that result into a band score using built-in IELTS-style thresholds.

In simple terms:

  • more correct answers = higher band score
  • fewer correct answers = lower band score

Writing scores​

For Writing, the app uses AI grading.

Your writing is scored across four criteria:

  • Task Achievement
  • Coherence & Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range

These four scores are averaged, and the result is rounded to the nearest 0.5 band.

:::note Writing needs internet access Writing grading is the only part of the app that needs an internet connection, because it sends your response to an external AI grading service. :::

What you see on the Dashboard​

Completed scores can appear in the Band Score Progress chart on your Dashboard, so you can see how your results change over time across Reading, Listening, and Writing.

Retakes and attempt history​

When you retake a test, the app does not overwrite the old attempt.

Instead, it creates a new attempt. This means:

  • your earlier attempt still exists in your history
  • a retake may appear as Attempt 2, Attempt 3, and so on
  • the Dashboard and Test Library use your most recent attempt for that test

This helps you keep a record of your progress instead of losing older results.

A helpful way to read your scores​

Try not to focus on one result by itself. A single score is useful, but the bigger picture is even more helpful:

  • Are your Reading and Listening scores becoming more steady?
  • Is your Writing score improving after feedback and retakes?
  • Is your overall trend moving in the right direction?

That is where the Dashboard becomes most useful.
